We love to have people visit to meet the alpacas and would be delighted to welcome you to one of our open days.

 

We have been doing Alpaca Open Days on bank holiday Mondays for a number of years. If you have been in the past, thank you for joining us.

In order to give you the best experience, we offer two sessions – morning and afternoon – and limit the numbers by getting people to book in advance.

Cost

The cost for open days is £12 per adult and £6 per child (5-16yrs; 0-4yrs free).

Meeting the Alpacas

What you get

  • Join a small group (not more than 6 in total) to meet the alpacas.
  • A two-hour visit including refreshments for you and the alpacas.
  • You get to have a farm walk among the herd of alpacas, learning about them in a relaxed style with lots of stories about the many characters here at Welsh Valley Alpacas.
  • A hot or cold drink with homemade cake.
  • You get to feed the alpacas which means you can get up close and spend some time around these unique animals.

How much it costs

£30 per adult
£20 for children 12-16yrs
£15 for children 5-11yrs

We aim to keep the total group size to no more than 6. This means everyone in your group has a chance to have the best experience of being with the alpacas. Larger numbers change the dynamic for both people and animals. (If you really feel you need to have more people, let us know so we can discuss it with you and try to make suitable arrangements)

We are a working farm in Wales, so sometimes it is wet and muddy but we aim to limit your exposure to just ‘clean dirt’. If the weather is really awful, we can cope up to a point with getting under cover or we can discuss rescheduling. We want your visit to be memorable for all the right reasons.

Most of the visit is accessible for wheelchair access and we can adjust plans to suit most situations if you let us know in advance.

About Introduction to Alpacas

A Welsh Valley Alpacas Open Day is a great first introduction to these amazing animals but we know that for some of you that it is just not enough. Introduction to Alpacas lets you take it further.

Introduction to Alpacas is intended to help you spend some quality time with our herd of friendly alpacas. It is a fun and enjoyable event for people who just love alpacas and want to see and know more.

What you get

The session runs from 10 am to 1 pm with a break for refreshments. It is followed by a light lunch.

After a brief time indoors to give some background, we head out into the fields to meet the alpacas. We will be around them in their paddocks and around the lake. There will also be the opportunity to feed them and understand how we care for them. We will include some time looking at the fleece and some of the things you can do with it.

There will be plenty of photo-opportunities so do make sure you bring a camera. The alpacas love to show off and they are as interested in you, as you are in them.

What it costs

Meeting alpacas is a half-day session with light lunch and refreshments provided.

The cost is £50 per person and is intended for over 16’s.

We limit the group size to no more than 6 so that everyone has the opportunity to be close to the alpacas and have their questions answered.

About Basic Care of Alpacas

An introduction for those planning to have alpacas or those who want a refresher.

What you get

The course is a full day session running from 10 am to 4 pm with breaks for refreshments and light lunch.

There will be seated teaching sessions but also plenty of barn-time covering the basics of how to keep and care for alpacas. Though an introduction, this course is intended to be practical in nature and will help you gain an understanding and appreciation of the issues to be addressed and how to approach them in caring for alpacas. Course notes are provided, so you will have something to take away for future reference.

Given the breadth of material covered in a short time, while it is a practical course, it is by necessity more in the form of demonstration and discussion than individual practice. This is an introduction with more detail available in The Alpaca Shepherd – Advanced Husbandry modules (currently in development). There will be some hands-on and I will need assistants at various points in the course, so come prepared to get involved.

What it costs

Basic care of alpacas is a full day session with light lunch and refreshments provided.

The cost is £80 (inc VAT) per person, which includes refreshments and course notes.
